Weight Loss Myths & Facts

Healthy weight loss isn’t easy, but you don’t have to go it alone.

Weight Loss Myths

The myths surrounding healthy weight loss are almost as vast as the facts. But it shouldn’t have to be so difficult to lose weight the right way without all the confusion. That’s why we’re highlighting a few common myths that often cloud the perception of weight loss and immediately dispelling them with the facts to help you get on a clearer path to healthier living.

Let’s begin with the first myth that led us to create our Wellness Through Weight Management program at Vibrant Med Spa.

Myth #1: I have to go it alone when losing weight.

Fact: At Vibrant Med, we are dedicated to helping you achieve your weight loss goals. We’ve assembled a team of health professionals, including Owner Erica Chowning, APRN, FNP-C and Director of Wellness Ashley Wilhoite, LPN, RN & BSN, to guide you along your journey in achieving the optimal health and wellness that you deserve. Rest assured, we will be with you each step of the way.

Myth #2: I will not be able to lose weight if I eat sweets.

Fact: Although it is not recommended to indulge in sweets or high-carbohydrate foods, it is totally acceptable to eat certain sweet treats every now and then. If your sweet tooth starts nagging you, don’t reach for that box of donuts. Opt for some dark chocolate containing at least 85% cocoa. It typically has much less sugar than other chocolate and is great for snacks when added with nuts and fresh berries. You’ll be surprised at how it satisfies your sweet craving.

Myth #3: I have to do cardio workouts every day to lose weight and achieve the results I want.

Fact: Although cardio exercises (such as running, brisk walking, and high-intensity training workouts) are essential in burning calories to lose weight, other types of exercise can promote healthy weight loss just as well. For example:

  • Yoga has proven beneficial for not only weight loss but also for de-stressing and de-cluttering the mind to ultimately promote a healthier lifestyle. Regular yoga can lower blood pressure and have a calming effect on the psyche, which can help you make healthier choices.
  • Lifting weights will not only help you build lean muscle and blow off some steam in the process, but it has also been scientifically proven to burn calories and boost your metabolism for up to 38 hours post-workout. That means you’ll be burning fat even when your body is at rest!

Bottom line: if you’re moving, you’re being active…and that’s a good thing. However, it’s best to have some type of consistent movement for 30 minutes or more for each workout to increase your heart rate and promote the weight loss you desire.

Myth #4: I have to deprive myself and be a little hungry to lose weight.

Fact: Au contraire! The nutrients that we consume on a day-to-day basis through a healthy diet are essential in promoting health and wellness. You just have to eat the right nutrient-dense foods. A diet rich with vitamins and minerals will boost metabolism and help turn your body into fat-burning machine.

Concentrate on foods such as lean meats (fish or chicken) and fresh vegetables, which are packed with protein and other nutrients that your body needs to function at full potential. Once you start eating the right way, you’ll quickly find that you become satisfied sooner during your meal and for longer periods of time afterwards than if you indulged in highly processed foods, empty carbs, or sugary treats.

To sum it up:

Losing weight is a process and a wonderful journey – a journey to a healthier you. Through our program, it’s not going to be some quick fix, because those usually end in disappointment.
